What I Ate Today: Spaghetti alle Vongole

Spaghetti alle vongole, Italian for spaghetti with clams, is a dish we love. But one we have never made at home … until this week.

Seventy two year old Ana Gomez and her husband Felix Pedro (who claims to be 108 years old) spend their days digging clams on the beach. And it is thanks to their efforts that we recently came home from a day at Playa Hermosa with a pound of tiny baby clams and were inspired to cook the classic Italian dish, spaghetti alle vongole.

Today while at Playa Hermosa we had the pleasure of meeting 72 year old Ana Gomez. She told me her husband Felix who was up the beach a ways will soon be turning 108 years old!?! 🤔 😉 Anyhow … together with their daughter they were digging for clams which they sell to local restaurants for $2.54 USD per pound. For 15 minutes or so we twisted our feet in the sand in a back and forth motion as Ana was doing. During that period of time she got 4 clams.
