Delaney started her Nicaraguan adventure in September 2017.

Today we wanted to share a brief glimpse into the heart and mind of one of our favorite new additions to our little community. Delaney, her man Grant and Mylo (known as the white bear by local kids) were clients of ours and it was our pleasure to assist them with their relocation to San Juan del Sur. We are now friends — and since we moved into our new home — we are neighbors as well.

Delaney’s latest Facebook post about our little town says it all …

“The energy of this town is held in its streets. These dirt and stone pathways of connection hold thousands of footsteps of history and stories. You will not find stillness as you step onto the road.

The first beam of light blankets the barrio. I wake up to the sounds of howler monkeys and roosters as the men are reaching for their machetes to begin their work.

It’s not yet 7 am and the repeated words of “JUGO JUGO” are heard from a block over; the vendors are making their daily rounds through each neighborhood. The wind kicks up the dirt and stirs the hen’s feathers as she guides her chicks to the other side of my house.

As I begin my walk to town, passing by each home, I smile at the morning comradery between neighbors as I wave and we greet each other with a short, “Buen dia”.

The 8 main streets are packed with motos, bikes and cars. The local women are in colorful aprons making fresh tortillas and I see men with tan flat baskets selling avocados and fresh produce.

There’s an abrupt, “RIVAS RIVAS!!” as the chicken bus is making its last call before departure. A few steps away from the market, on the street corner, I hear a man ask, “Taxi chica? Taxi?”

Meandering along the sidewalks I bump into 5 friends as we briefly catch each other up on our yesterdays and day ahead, knowing we will likely see one another tomorrow. Backpackers catch my eye as they fumble through bartering with a local over handmade pottery.

The sun dips down, the parrots swarm the trees singing their sunset ritual song and the kids make their way back home with skinned knees. The echoes of their laughter and boisterous voices linger along with 4 large rocks that represented the goal posts of their “soccer field” that day.

It’s not yet 6 pm and the sun has gone to bed, but the energy livens. Families gather outside their homes in large plastic chairs circled around a small grill. I am tucked into a hill in the side of town, but I can still hear whispers of live music at the local brewery, the hymns being sung at the church and the neighborhood dogs begin their barking banter using the howls of the feral cats as back up.

I am only comforted by noise as I sleep now, because the energy of this town is held in its streets.”

  1. Ahh…love it! As I read this, I could picture myself there in San Juan del Sur. It captured all my senses and brought back memories of our last trip. Can’t wait for our next visit. Hopefully I’ll get to meet Delaney and tell her in person what a great writer she is :).
