An easy and unforgettable day trip from Managua, Masaya or Granada Volcan Masaya is one of the most visibly active volcanoes in the country, featuring several naked gaping craters and a constant stream of sulfurous gas visible from as far away as Managua.
In 1979, Masaya became Nicaragua’s first National Park, named Masaya Volcano National Park (Parque Nacional Volcan Masaya).
The park is open seven days a week from 9:45 am to 4:45 pm. Admission is C$100 (approximately $4 USD) per person. It is located on the highway to Masaya (Carretera Masaya), kilometer 23.
The Masaya Volcano National Park comprises an area of 54 km² and includes two volcanoes and five craters.
The volcanoes have erupted several times in history, and were feared by both the indigenous people and the Spanish conquerors. The Spanish baptized the active volcano “La Boca del Infierno” or “The Mouth of Hell”.
They planted a cross, “La Cruz de Bobadilla” (named after Father Francisco Bobadilla), on the crater lip in the 16th century in order to exorcise the Devil.
Due to a minor eruption in April of 2012, for the time being hiking up the stairs towards the cross is not permitted.
The park’s wildlife includes coyotes, skunks, raccoons, opossums, deer, iguanas, and monkeys and therefore the guard suggested we carry Maggie.
As a visitor you can peek over the edge at the Masaya Volcano, and look into the impressive crater, which is continuously emitting smoke and sulfur gases.
The eruptions have had a dramatic impact on the surroundings. Rocks and volcanic ashes still cover the area surrounding the volcanoes.
The landscape is rough yet peaceful. Different types of vegetation appeared after the eruptions.
From the central crater it is possible to start hiking to other craters and viewpoints. Walk up a bit to get a view of the smoking volcano and the fascinating surroundings.
Volcan Masaya can be accessed from the main highway between Masaya and Managua. It is close to the midway point on the west side of the road. Just look for the signs.
