Hurricane Iota Relief: Tola, Nicaragua

Tola, Nicaragua

As we handed out our very last relief package dozens of families still surrounded us asking for support. The look of despair on their faces when we told them we had nothing more to give was heartbreaking.

The need in the community of Tola was much greater than our team of volunteers had anticipated.

Two Hurricanes in Two Weeks

On November 3, 2020 Hurricane Eta hit Nicaragua. And two weeks later on November 17th category 5 Hurricane Iota struck.

Heavy rains brought flooding that resulted in destruction leaving hundreds homeless, hungry and without clean drinking water.

For those that have so little a loss like this is devastating.

A Hard Hit & Burden to Bear

As I stepped through the slick mud and approached our first home I saw piles of clothes on the ground covered in sludge.

Bedsheets were arranged on some fallen debris. A bright red sofa set was placed outside in an attempt to dry it out in the sun.

A hungry puppy sniffed cautiously at my feet.

It might be stormy now, but it can’t last forever!

Yesterday, thanks to a team of volunteers from the Jean Brugger Foundation — and donations from locals and foreigners — our group of 37 was able to deliver 120 relief packages to 6 different communities.

The bright smiles of gratitude on these people’s faces as they received their packages was something special to see and feel.

Our Goal

The need in Tola is still so great. And we want to continue to aid.

With your help we can provide some nourishment and a bit of comfort to more families as they work together to rebuild their homes and communities.

A donation of $20 USD covers the cost of all essentials shown in this photo. With $2000 USD we can deliver another 100 packages.

Can You Help?

If you have the resources to help a Nicaraguan family — while they recover from the ruin of Hurricane Eta and Iota — please consider donating.

If you don’t have the financial means to donate you can still help. Please share this story with friends and family, co-workers, members of your congregation and anyone else who may be willing and able to contribute.

No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of another.
